Spring Song
by Antonio Machado

Selected and Translated from Spanish
by Gill Schwartz

Clouds, sun, hamlet, and green pasture
intermingled on the hill. Spring
has put in the air of this cold country field
the grace of its poplars by the river shore.

The valley's roads wend to the river,
and there, together with the water, love waits.
Has this embellishment of youth been placed
there for you, O invisible companion?

And this perfume of a bean field in the wind?
And this first white daisy?...
Do you come with me? I sense in my hand

a double heartbeat. My heart cries
as in my temples the thought deafens me:
it is you who blossoms and revives.
